The Seymour Blasters have been a team to look out for in the North East Women conference this season. They're currently tied in second place with Albury heading into the Round 16 this weekend. As the reigning champions, the blasters have their sights firmly fixed on the finals hoping to win back-to-back titles. They’ve got all the right pieces to make this, but perhaps the most crucial piece of the puzzle is their main scoring weapon, Tayha Watkins.
Watkins has been on an absolute tear this season, amassing a total of 212 points in only 8 games. She leads the North East Women in total points, with the second-highest player managing 206 points in 10 games. She has been a big part of the blaster's success and will look to finish the season off with a championship ring on her finger.
She has been a standout player this season, which makes sense when you realise the sport of basketball has been a part of her life from an early age.
“My dad played at a high level and my mum played basketball too, so it was always in my blood to want to play basketball. They always encouraged me and my brothers to play basketball. My first basketball memory would have to be playing in the backyard with my family. I always loved when I went outside with my brothers and just shot around.” Tayha said.
Tayha was hooked and started competing at her local club. She was committed to basketball and would not be tempted by other sports.
“I started to play basketball competitively at the age of seven down at my local club the Hurstbridge Hurricanes. I did not play any other sports growing up, basketball was just it for me. I chose basketball over every other sport because I am an extremely competitive person who likes to always try my best at things.”
“Basketball just made so much sense to me when I was growing up, I love that it is such a simple game that everyone can play, but it can be so complex at the same time.” She said.
Fast forward to today, Tayha Watkins has certainly channelled her competitive spirit in the CBL.
“This season has been fun, but so challenging at the same time. I have such great teammates who make it so enjoyable to play each week. Bill gives me the support and backing that I need to be successful in this league.”
“My teammates do such an excellent job of executing the offence which allows all of us to get great looks to score. I also have developed a strong sense of confidence within myself, working hard on my game at an individual level with my coaches.” She said.
With big goals for herself and the team, Tayha is always looking for ways to develop as a player.
“I think one of the most important goals for the team this year is the development that we get along the way. We have a lot of younger girls in the team which allows us older girls to lead by example. I think for myself it is trying new things and developing new skills to be able to bring into the next NBL1 season. But also, to have fun while playing the sport I love.”
