Basketball Victoria celebrates the outstanding achievements of its community each year with the Basketball Victoria Awards.
The Basketball Victoria Awards celebrate the best and brightest within the Victorian basketball community across the calendar year.
From our elite international players, to our hard-working associations and the volunteers that keep our sport going, this event celebrates all who are involved within Victorian basketball.
These accolades and achievements have been won over the years by a number of incredible athletes, coaches, administrators and volunteers. The likes of Matthew Dellavedova, Penny Taylor, Andrew Gaze, Andrew Bogut and Jenna O’Hea are just a few of the famous names to receive Basketball Victoria Awards.
Basketball Victoria Service Awards
Basketball Victoria's service awards celebrate those individuals who have contributed a significant period of their lives to helping enhance and cultivate Victorian basketball at all levels of the sport.
Service awards acknowledge the numerous hours, efforts and planning of association members, referees, administrators, coaches and volunteers for either 15, 25, 35, 50 or 60 years of commitment and dedication to our sport and associations.
Associations are encouraged to nominate long serving individuals from within their association for a Basketball Victoria Service Award at any time throughout the year.

Jack Carter Memorial Award
This award is given to the Basketball Administrator of the Year. The award recognises an administrator for their outstanding contribution to Victorian basketball in Victoria.
The administrator may be recognised for their work in areas such as:
- - Developmental activities
- - Increased participation numbers,
- - Management skills,
- - Facility development,
- - Marketing activities
- - Financial achievements.
Jack Terril Medal
This award recognises a significant and outstanding contribution by an individual to Basketball in Country Victoria.
The administrator may be recognised for their work in such areas:
- - Outstanding service to basketball that might include extraordinary, significant, and/or demonstrated contribution to the betterment of basketball and their local community/organisation.
- - Made a lasting or meaningful contribution or impact on basketball in their community.
- - Consistently demonstrated the highest standards and qualities with actions recognised and valued by their peers.
- - The respect of peers
- - General acknowledgement as having reached a pinnacle in basketball.
Award Categories - Athletes
Wheelchair Basketball Athlete of the Year
This award is presented to a wheelchair athlete who has progressed to represent at a state, national or international level of competition. Athletes must also have displayed good sportsmanship and have represented the state or country in a manner befitting the responsibility.
Basketball Athlete of the Year with an Intellectual Disability
This award is given to a basketball athlete with an intellectual disability who participated in the 2022 Australian Ivor Burge Championships and showed good sportsmanship and have represented the state or country in a manner befitting the responsibility.
Award Categories - Associations
Volunteer of the Year
This award is given to the Basketball Volunteer of the Year. This award goes to an individual who has made an exemplary voluntary contribution and who through their volunteering has made a significant impact in their community having received no income from Basketball (Note: honoraria excepted).
The criteria for judgement are subjective, but considerable involvement of an individual’s own free time to benefit basketball is the basis.
To be considered in the following areas:
- - The person should have demonstrated superior efforts and initiatives.
- - Demonstrated outstanding commitment to the Basketball community.
- - Demonstrated reliability, positivity, flexibility, and initiative.
- - Demonstrated effectiveness as an individual, or as part of a team.
- - Be an ambassador for Basketball or the local community who acts and works for the best interest of the basketball, the association and/or Club.
Diversity & Inclusion Volunteer of the Year
This award is given to the D&I Volunteer of the Year. This award goes to an individual that has committed to D&I and made a positive impact on community engagement and contributed to the overall D&I of the basketball Association.
To be considered in the following areas:
- - Demonstrated commitment to D&I principles through consistent actions and involvement
- - Actively seeking to include diverse individuals in basketball activities & programs
- - Demonstrated a commitment to understanding and addressing bias, discrimination and other issues related to D& I within the basketball community
- - Worked with the community and other stakeholders to foster an inclusive and equitable experience for all
- - Providing guidance, mentored and supported individuals from underrepresented groups
Diversity & Inclusive Program of the Year
This award is given to the D&I Program of the Year in an Association. This award goes to the Association that has conducted and delivered a successful D&I program. It recognises programs that have created accessible facilities, adapted rules and provided inclusive practices for individuals with disabilities.
To be considered in the following areas:
- - Positive attitudes and building an inclusive community
- - Initiatives that cater to the diverse cultural needs of participants
- - Fostered a positive and welcoming environment for all with respect, dignity and a sense of belonging
- - Promoting and raising awareness about diversity within the basketball community
- - Demonstrated a long-term commitment to D&I program/s that have a significant impact
Coach of the Year
This award recognises a coach who has made a significant contribution to the sport. The coach should exhibit knowledge of the game (rules, systems, coaching philosophy), rapport with the team and respect from players, ethical conduct both on and off the court, development of players, involvement within the association, community involvement and respect for and from other coaches and officials.
Official of the Year
This award recognises a referee, scorebench official or statistician who has made a significant contribution throughout the year.
Basketball Association of the Year
There are four categories:
- Micro - 0 to 150 – participants
- Small - 150 to 500 – participants
- Medium - 500 to 2500 – participants
- Large - 2500 and above – participants
This award recognises an outstanding association that experienced significant achievements. The selection committee will consider achievements such as membership and participation growth, new program development, community involvement, venue development, strategic planning and championship results among other achievements, in addition to marketing and promotion of the game, media, community leadership, player, coach, referee, volunteer development, and being up to date with Basketball Victoria policies, procedures and fees.
To be considered in the following areas:
- - Participation retention and growth
- - Financial performance
- - Contribution or activity to or in the community
- - Contribution within a region
- - Athletes, Coaches, Officials and Administrators development
- - Operation of Programs
- - Coordination of significant events such as National Championships, National League games and/or involvement
Officials Program of the Year
There are four categories:
- Micro - 0 to 150 – participants
- Small - 150 to 500 – participants
- Medium - 500 to 2500 – participants
- Large - 2500 and above – participants
The winning program will be selected upon their achievements through development activities, training programs and engagement. In addition, increased officials’ numbers and retention.
Media/ Promotion Award
The media award recognises media organisations that have supported the sport of basketball in Victoria. The award recognises a publication or program covering basketball.
Nominations are not sought after for the following categories.
Betty Watson Medal and Alan Hughes Medal
These awards are made to the Victorian female and male player who has made the greatest contribution and achievements.
If over 18 - representing at state league, national league and/or international level during the year.
If under 18 - The junior player must have made a significant contribution to basketball, exhibited a high level of commitment.
Victorian Junior Awards
Like the Alan Hughes and Betty Watson medals, these awards are to be given to the Victorian junior male and female (under 18 years) who has made the greatest contribution and achievements during the year. The junior player must have made a significant contribution to basketball, exhibited a high level of commitment.
Association Innovation or Initiative of the Year
The criteria emphasises that the innovation or initiative must significantly impact the delivery of basketball or a related area (Note: This award is not necessarily awarded annually.)
