Mandatory Coach Accreditation to be implemented in 2023
What is it?
Beginning in 2023, coaches will be required to go through coach education training before coaching in any of the leagues run by Basketball Victoria. Upon completing the training, coaches will gain their Basketball Australia coaching accreditation, and will receive a certificate and additional resources to help with their coaching.
This is keeping in line with the current requirement for coaches that coach at the Basketball Victoria Country Championships, who have had this requirement since 2017.
In 2023 all coaches at Australian Junior Championships will be required to hold a level of accreditation, and this gives coaches the best chances of being prepared for this should they coach there.
When does it start?
For all competitions that begin in 2022 onwards, it is “recommended” that coaches have gone through the training, but it not mandatory.
Start dates for the mandatory coach training to be completed are:
- Country Basketball League (CBL) – 1st October 2023
- VJBL & Country Championships – 1st November 2023
- Big V & NBL1 – 1st March 2024
This is to give coaches and associations enough time to plan and prepare before coaching appointments are made for the following season.
Why is this being implemented?
The most important asset we have as a sport, is the player. Without them we have no need for coaches, officials, or stadiums. The number one reason that players leave sport, is that it’s no longer fun for them.
As a sport, we want to provide the best possible experience for the players and the first touch point for most athletes when they come into the sport – is the coach. Even with most coaches being volunteers, we want to be as good as we possibly can be, and we owe it to our players to be trained and educated to provide the best possible experience for the players.
Coaching is daunting for many who are starting out, whether it be a family member that has played before, a parent thrown in the deep end, a volunteer from the club or someone from within the community wanting to be involved in the sport.
By providing training, coaches gain confidence and tools to stay in the sport, rather than trying to find willing volunteers every new season. The longer the coaches stay in the sport the more experience they gain, and the more experience they have, the better the coach they become.
We can all learn from coaches that have gone through before us how to avoid problems and reasons to not coach, as well as remain current with our basketball knowledge with the sport constantly evolving.
