Melbourne, VICTORIA – Confidence. Leadership. Lifelong friendships. Skills that last far beyond the final buzzer.
That's what awaits the next group of young women when Basketball Victoria's Lead Your Way program returns this September, with applications now open for Round 3 at Ballarat's Selkirk Stadium.
Held from 21–23 September, Lead Your Way is designed for girls aged 13–17 involved in basketball as players, coaches or referees. The three-day program helps participants build confidence, strengthen leadership and communication skills, and connect with like-minded girls from across regional Victoria in a fun, supportive environment.
More than just a basketball program, Lead Your Way encourages participants to step outside their comfort zones, discover their potential and develop skills they'll carry with them throughout their basketball journey—and beyond.
Basketball Victoria Women and Girls Participation Manager Leah Swain said the transformation participants experience over just a few days is what makes the program so rewarding.
"One of the best parts of Lead Your Way is seeing girls arrive feeling nervous or unsure of themselves, then leave with greater confidence, new friendships and the belief that they can be leaders within their clubs and communities," Swain said.
"It's not about being the best basketballer. It's about challenging yourself, learning new skills, supporting others and discovering what you're capable of in a welcoming environment. Those are skills that stay with you long after the program finishes."
The recent Traralgon program gave participants the opportunity to put those skills into practice, delivering an Under-8 skills clinic at the Southern Aboriginal Sports First Nations Tournament. While many were initially nervous, they embraced the challenge, building confidence while discovering their leadership and coaching potential.
Participants also experienced wheelchair basketball, strengthening their communication and teamwork while gaining a greater appreciation for inclusive basketball. Leadership sessions led by Trisha Diano from Living in Your Greatness further developed self-awareness, resilience and communication skills, helping participants grow both on and off the court.
The impact extended well beyond the program itself, with girls travelling from across Gippsland to take part, forming lasting friendships, supporting one another and leaving with renewed confidence in themselves and their abilities.
