Frankston, Victoria – Construction is set to begin on the highly anticipated Frankston Basketball Stadium facility redevelopment, transforming it into a state-of-the-art sporting hub for basketball and gymnastics.
At a special event on Friday 18 July, Frankston City Council leaders were joined by Federal Member for Dunkley, Jodie Belyea, State Member for Frankston, Paul Edbrooke and local basketball and gymnastics administrators to mark the turning of the sod, celebrating the official start of works for this significant community project.
Facility development and expansion is crucial to maintaining the viability of basketball’s future here in Victoria. The sport's rapid growth has placed enormous pressure on existing infrastructure, threatening participation and equal access to this great game across our community. Basketball Victoria’s General Manager of Government, Strategy and Innovation Jake Keogh said the precinct was a “really positive outcome” for basketball in the south-east.
“Basketball Victoria works extensively with all levels of government, basketball associations and clubs, other indoor state sporting organisations and advocacy groups to ensure Victorian indoor sporting requirements are always in discussion or development.
Basketball's success has become its biggest challenge, but projects like this Frankston Basketball Stadium redevelopment demonstrate the value in all working together to plan to our community’s growth.’
The ambitious redevelopment, located at the existing Bardia Avenue site in Seaford, is Frankston City's largest infrastructure project. It is due for completion mid-2027 and aims to solidify Frankston City's reputation as a major sporting destination in Melbourne's south-east.
The project has secured a total of $60 million in funding, with significant contributions from the local council, State Government, and Federal Government. The advocacy campaign in 2022 was instrumental in securing $15 million in funding commitments from both the state and federal governments. Williams Ross Architects were engaged by Frankston City Council at the end of 2023 to design this transformative facility.
Key Features of the Redevelopment:
The redeveloped stadium will be a two-storey, all-electric facility with high sustainability aspirations, targeting a 5 Star GreenStar Building Certification.
Key features include:
- Expanded Courts: A total of 10 courts, comprising six brand-new courts and the refurbishment of four existing ones.
- Show Court: A dedicated show court with an upstairs viewing area and retractable seating for up to 1,000 people, designed to host national and international televised events.
- Dedicated Gymnastics Facility: Frankston City's first dedicated community gymnastics facility, providing state-of-the-art amenities for the rapidly growing Bayside Gymnastics Club.
- Media and Event Spaces: A media room, lighting suitable for televising games, a kitchen and functions space, and meeting/events rooms overlooking the show court.

It will serve as the new home for the Frankston and District Basketball Association and will be co-located with the Bayside Gymnastics Club, both of which have outgrown their current premises.
Wayne Holdsworth, Chief Executive Officer of FDBA was excited about the possibilities the new facility and additional courts would bring their association.
“It’s an incredible opportunity to further grow the participation rate and further increase female participation, along with the opportunity to host major National and International games of our great sport - basketball. This is a historic day in Frankston’s history.”
