June is Pride Month, a time when we internationally celebrate the LGBTIQ+ community through awareness, acceptance, and unity. Throughout the month, communities around the world come together through a range of events, and Basketball Victoria is proud to once again play its part in fostering inclusion within the game we love.
Building on the success of last year - which 25 associations proudly participated in - we are excited to continue this important initiative in 2025, in collaboration with NBL1 South and Big V leagues. We encourage all clubs and associations across Victoria to join us in hosting a dedicated Pride Round, celebrating diversity both on and off the court.
This year, our Pride Month merchandise includes a fresh drop of drawstring bags, joining our previously released lanyards and towels as visible symbols of support. These items aren’t just gear - they’re statements of unity, inclusion, and respect.
Why Pride in Sport Matters
A recent Pride in Sport study found that 80% of participants had witnessed or experienced homophobia in sport, and 60% said a club’s track record in LGBTIQ+ inclusion would influence their decision to join. It’s clear: sport must evolve to become a more inclusive, safe space for everyone - and basketball can lead the way.
Sport has the power to unite, empower, and uplift. It encourages not only physical activity but mental well-being, teamwork, and resilience. More importantly, it provides a unique platform to challenge stereotypes and champion social change. By celebrating Pride, our basketball community sends a strong message: everyone belongs.
“Creating a Pride Round is one way we can give our community the opportunity to actively support LGBTIQ+ inclusion,” said a Basketball Victoria spokesperson. “It’s a celebration of diversity, but also a statement of our values - that basketball in Victoria is a place for everyone.”
Whether you’re a local association, a player, a coach, or a fan - there’s a role for you in making basketball more welcoming.
Let’s continue building an inclusive, connected, and stronger basketball community - together. Pride rounds will be happening throughout June across Big V and NBL1 South.
