Victoria, Melbourne - Basketball Victoria proudly congratulates Sarah Simpson from Westgate Basketball Association on being named the recipient of the Women in Sport Australia Community Award - a recognition that celebrates her exceptional dedication and commitment to her association.
We nominated Sarah as her tireless volunteering efforts with Westgate Basketball Association were a standout. Her passion and dedication to expanding opportunities across every area of her association were recognised earlier this year when she was named Volunteer of the Year at the 2024 Basketball Victoria Annual Awards.
Basketball Victoria CEO, Nick Honey acknowledges how important all our volunteers are at our associations, “Volunteers like Sarah are the heartbeat of our sport. Every association across Victoria is built on the passion, generosity, and commitment of people who give their time to create opportunities for others. Sarah’s recognition is a wonderful reflection of the thousands of volunteers who make basketball possible every week — from being on committees, running programs and coaching teams, to building inclusive communities where everyone feels welcome.”
Through her leadership, advocacy, and community programs, she continues to champion the belief that sport should be a place for everyone - regardless of gender, background, or ability.
Women in Sport Australia is committed to improving the sporting landscape for women and girls so that stereotypes and gender inequality no longer exist. The organisation leads change to achieve fairness, inclusivity, and the right for every woman and girl to pursue her passion for sport without judgment, limitations, or barriers.
Whether at a local court or on the national stage, Women in Sport Australia aims to level the playing field by forging connections, fostering collaborations, and creating opportunities for women and girls to thrive. Their mission goes beyond wins and losses — it’s about changing mindsets and building a future where women’s participation and leadership in sport are celebrated equally.
Sarah’s recognition highlights the strength of community-driven change and the vital role volunteers, administrators, and advocates play in building a more equitable sporting landscape. Basketball Victoria congratulates Sarah on this outstanding achievement and thanks her for her tireless contribution to empowering women and girls in basketball.
