Nyadiew Puoch to attend Centre of Excellence

Basketball Victoria would like to congratulate Nyadiew Puoch on receiving a scholarship to the Basketball Australia Centre of Excellence (CoE).

Nyadiew Puoch has shone in the Victorian High Performance Program. She earned selection in this year’s Victoria Metropolitan Under-18 Girls team as well as being an important member of our Victoria Metropolitan Under-16 Girls team that won gold in Darwin at the 2019 Australian Junior Championships.

Her achievements also include wins at the National Junior Classic with her Dandenong Rangers team and she’s also a member of our Victorian National Performance Program.

Puoch will join the program in term 4 (pending travel restrictions from Victoria) alongside South Australia’s Isobel Borlase as new scholarship holders.

Additionally, Basketball Australia has announced a six-month extension of five scholarship athletes due to graduate at the end of 2020 including Victorians Jade Melbourne, Olivia Pollerd and Emily Sewell. This will see the Victorian trio graduate from the program in June/July 2021. With basketball the only focus, it is hoped that this investment will see these athletes ready for the challenges of representative duties with the Gems and prepare them for their college careers.

“Despite these uncertain and challenging times times for many, we are fortunate to be able to provide two very promising athletes the amazing opportunity of a Centre of Excellence scholarship at the world-renowned Australian Institute of Sport,” Centre of Excellence – Women’s Head Coach Kristen Veal said.

“Through extensive talent identification pre-COVID, we are excited about Nyadiew and Isobel’s international athleticism, skill sets and enthusiasm for the game which have clearly shown through in their High Performance Programs, at National Championships and Australian camps. We believe they will embrace and excel in the daily training environment.

“We look forward to both young ladies joining the current cohort and believe they will be great additions to the group and program – for Isobel that will be at the start of 2021 and for Nyadiew her start date is pending due to the current COVID situation in Victoria.”
