Basketball Victoria would like to welcome Matt Royal and Melissa Thomas to our Leagues and Competitions department.
They will directly work on Country and state-wide Victorian events, tournaments and competitions.
Matt Royal will start as our Leagues, Events and Statistics Administrator in late April. He will be based out of Traralgon and his background includes working for the National Basketball League (NBL) in its statistics department.
Royal will work in competition management across a number of leagues and events including the Country Basketball League (CBL), Junior Country Basketball League, Country Championships and other tournaments and programs throughout Victoria. He will also be the touchpoint for Victorian statisticians at Basketball Victoria and work to manage software and resources for statisticians and scorebench officials.
“I’m looking forward to joining Basketball Victoria and getting into the Country Basketball League and Country Championships and jumping in there and carrying on the country tradition that’s been there,” Royal said. “I’m keen to jump straight into CBL and make sure the 2021/22 season gets off the ground and is bigger and better than our COVID-affected season this year.
“With the Stats side of my role, I just want to get in there and develop our Victorian statisticians and give us a voice and assist our statisticians across the state as required.”
Melissa Thomas has started this month as our Events and Leagues Administrator and will be based at Ballarat. She was a former Basketball Victoria intern, worked at Basketball Ballarat for four years and was part of the Cricket World Cup in England in 2019. Primarily she will be focused on Basketball Victoria events as well as an oversight role for the Country Basketball League and Country Championships.
I’m really excited to be back at Basketball Victoria after working in basketball as a university intern in 2014,” Thomas said. “Since then I have been a SEABL and Big V club administrator at Ballarat and also spent some time overseas where I worked at the Cricket World Cup.
“I’m really looking forward to the Events and Leagues Administrator role where I can bring my association and international experience to all Basketball Victoria league and competition events starting with the Under-14 Country Championships this weekend in Bendigo.”
Basketball Victoria General Manager – Leagues and Competitions Dean Anglin said Royal and Thomas will be great additions to the department and provide plenty of expertise.
“With the return of basketball it is exciting to be able to recruit exceptional people to accommodate the growing administrative needs of our sport,” Anglin said. “Matt and Melissa have worked extensively in Victorian basketball and understand what it takes to run a successful sporting organisation and what is needed behind the scenes to make it happen.
“As basketball continues to grow in Victoria, we’re working to assist associations, clubs, branches and officials on our newly incorporated systems and structures, in which Royal and Thomas will work extensively.
“They are great additions to our Leagues and Competitions team and we look forward to seeing them out in the Victorian basketball community.”
