Basketball Victoria would like to congratulate long-serving staff member Karen Pearce OAM who received a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in yesterday’s Queen’s Birthday Honours List.
Karen received her OAM for her exceptional service to sports administration throughout her career at Basketball Victoria and now Football Victoria.
Karen worked for Basketball Victoria for 20 years and worked tirelessly throughout the organisation in a number of roles, most recently as the General Manager of Inclusion and Strategy before she moved to Football Victoria in 2019.
An advocate for inclusion across our sport for an incredible two decades, Karen was committed to giving better access to our sport for all Victorians – especially women and girls, players from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and multicultural communities and people with disability.
She pioneered a number of initiatives within Basketball Victoria and the Australian basketball community including Aussie Hoops, Walking Basketball, the Courage and Confidence program and creating new opportunities for Victorian wheelchair basketball players after Basketball Victoria took on state-wide management of the game.
“Yesterday I was honoured with an OAM for my service to sports administration,” Pearce said. “I have always said how privileged I am to work in sport and seek ways to enable access and a more equitable sporting world.
“My field in sport has enabled me to be surrounded by the most incredible, passionate and wonderful people who have helped put the smile on my face every single day to absolutely love what I do.
“If you are yet to immerse yourself in the world of equity, diversity and inclusion, make sure you take that step today and help make the world a better place.
“You too will smile a little more broadly and know you are making a difference.
“Much blessings to those who have been part of my journey: thank you.”
Karen was awarded the Victorian Sports Administrator of the Year in 2018 and was a finalist for the Peter Norman Inclusion Award, highlighting her exceptional work leading our inclusion programs throughout Victoria.
Her work enabled Basketball Victoria to lead in a number of key areas and evolve to match our desire to provide every Victorian with a pathway into basketball.
“This is an extraordinary honour for an extraordinary person and we’re thrilled to see Karen Pearce receive an Order of Australia Medal,” Basketball Victoria CEO Nick Honey said. “Karen’s list of achievements at Basketball Victoria is incredible and highlights her passion and commitment to giving all Victorians an opportunity to play our sport.
“We were lucky to have her at Basketball Victoria for 20 years and we’re excited to see her continue her passion for inclusion in sport with Football Victoria.
“On behalf of Basketball Victoria, I would like to congratulate Karen on this outstanding achievement.”
