Basketball Geelong is pleased to announce the Supercats Elite Team and Big V Youth Squad for the 2019 Senior Competitions.
Both groups will be working closely together to create a pathway from Big V Youth League to our Elite Team.
‘It is an exciting time for Basketball in Geelong and in particular our Elite Team as we rebuild our program around young and upcoming players from the Geelong Region. The inclusion of Michael Rebula, Lewis Varley and Cohen Blythe shows an emphasis that the Supercats has on providing a pathway for our local talent.’ Coach Leon O’Neill said Today.
“Entering a new competition that is about to be re-branded and named and will include 17 other teams is an exciting time for everyone in the program. We are taking a youthful approach to our group who will play with a lot of enthusiasm and energy this year. Combined with seasoned veterans Nick Owusu, Ma’alo Hicks, Lewis Thomas and the return of Demarcus Gatlin we are poised to challenge for the championship again.’ O’Neill added
A further development surrounding the new competition is the ability for our Big V Youth League Squad to shift players up and down between the programs which has been problematic in the past. ‘We now have the ability to shift our most talented Big V Youth League players up into our Elite Team which has not been possible in previous years. This has created a pathway for our younger aspiring Supercats players to spring board into Australia’s second tier competition.’ Added O’Neill
It certainly is an exciting time to be involved in the Supercats program with Darren Hindle again heading up our Big V Youth League Men. Known for his ability to get the most out of his players by developing a strong winning culture, Darren proved his ability to guide his young group of men forward by challenging all before them and making the Big V Youth Division 1 Semi Finals. With a total of 19 players selected into the Supercats Youth League Mens Program Darren will work hard leading up to Xmas to determine the best possible team to represent the Supercats in the upcoming Big V Youth League Season. ‘By Xmas we will cut our group to 15 players and they will represent the program this year. We have so much talent to choose from we need to ensure we make the right decision on who will represent us in 2019.’
‘Our goal is a simple one to win the Division 1 Big V Youth League Championship this year. As a team and program, we have grown significantly both on and off the court and I am looking for these young men to take a huge step forward.
With both sides optimistic about their success we encourage everyone to #seered and join the Supercats program for a very exciting 2019.
Further announcements on the Women’s Elite and Big V Youth League Team will be made later in the week.
