Making the right choices about healthier eating and drinking, is one of the keys to better quality of life outcomes.
Basketball Victoria and our affiliated associations have a responsibility to ensure that the people coaching, officiating, administrating and participating in our programs and competitions are:
- in an environment where they can make healthy food and beverage choices
- aware of the benefits of healthy choices and the potential health risk associated with unhealthy food and beverage choices
Sugar sweetened beverages are the largest source of sugars in the Australian diet and high intake of these sugary drinks are associated with poorer health outcomes, such as increased weight gain and increased risk of tooth decay. Obesity contributes around 8 percent of the total burden of disease in Victoria, almost on par with tobacco use. With nearly two-thirds of Victorians currently overweight or obese, reducing intake of excess kilojoules through drinks is one way to promote a healthier diet and improved health. Using the Traffic Light Classification System is an effective way to monitor which foods to have often (green), moderately (amber) or rarely if at all (red).
The Healthy choices: food and drink classification guide categorises foods and drinks as GREEN, AMBER or RED based on their nutritional value.
The GREEN category – best choices
These foods and drinks are the healthiest choices. Ensure they are always available and displayed prominently. Actively promote and encourage GREEN foods and drinks.
The AMBER category – choose carefully
These foods and drinks should be selected carefully and consumed in moderation. Do not let AMBER items dominate the menu or choices displayed. Do not promote or advertise AMBER items at the expense of GREEN options. Offer healthier options within the AMBER category and avoid large serve sizes.
The RED category – limit
These foods and drinks should be consumed rarely and in small amounts. Availability and display of RED options should be limited and promotion and advertising of RED items should be avoided.
Good nutrition is important for a healthy lifestyle and contributes to the health and wellbeing of the community. Together with physical activity, healthy eating plays a key role in preventing disease, maintaining a healthy weight and supporting children’s growth and development.

Its about drinking more water and feeling better for it – a small change in return for big health benefits. We know that switching to water, even for a short time, can lower your health risks and kick start weight loss. You can find out how much money you’ll save and reward yourself. The aim of the Challenge is to build better habits, with water becoming the drink of choice over time.
