NATIONAL INTENSIVE TRAINING PROGRAM

The National Intensive Training Program (NITP) is Australia’s national development system and Basketball Victoria has country and metropolitan programs. In the metro NITP there are now 9 venues where sessions operate: Bulleen, Dandenong, Eltham, Keilor, Knox, MSAC, Nunawading, Waverly and Werribee.

Players are selected into the program by attending Basketball Victoria’s Development Camps. Whether it be the Under 17, 16, 15 or 14 Selection Camps, Player Development Camps or the Under 12 Central Talent Identification Camp; all of these camps not only offer playing improvement opportunity, they provide NITP selection. In recent times, although not many, athletes have been selected from the U12 Central Camp. This begins the development process early, solely due to the fact there is now an U17 World Championship being held every two years.

U17 and U19 World Championships are conducted in alternate years so we now have a Junior World Championship each year. Selection for Junior Australian Teams is made from Australian Junior Development Camps. The majority of athletes invited to the camps have demonstrated potential at an Australian Championship or are nominated through the NITP system. Athletes can receive AIS scholarships through the same process.

The NITP includes both male and female players and successful athletes are invited to attend the closest satellite venue to where they live. Consisting of two morning sessions per week, athletes work on individual skills, their ability to put skills into action, and their understanding of the game (offence, defence & transition principles). The major focus is on individual development.

In recent years, U18 athletes have attended the Waverley Stadium for the U18 Central program. Practicing appropriate drills against athletes of a similar ability and same gender - this has proven to be successful. In the New Year, a select group of U16 athletes are invited to train with the Central group of one session whilst maintaining their other session at their satellite venue.

A prestigious program recognised throughout the world, the NITP plays an integral role in Basketball Australia’s player development pathway.
