Vic Metro players represent Australia in FIBA U17 Women’s World Championship
Basketball Victoria and the VJBL would like to congratulate three Vic Metro junior players plus coach Marissa Fillipou on their recent outstanding achievement in representing Australia at the 2010 FIBA U17 Women’s World Championship.
Held in Toulouse/Rodez, France from 16-25 July, 2010, twelve teams from around the world competed in the inaugural U17 age group event. Australia finished in seventh place (winning 4 games out of 8) and the USA was the overall winner.
The Victoria Metropolitan players and coach in the 2010 U17 Australian Women’s team were:
Sara Blicavs Melbourne Aimie Clydesdale Dandenong Carley Mijovic Dandenong Marissa Fillipou (Assistant Coach) Frankston
Sara Blicavs (the third highest point scorer for the Australian team) averaged 9.9 points and 4.1 rebounds per game with a game high score of 19 points against Japan. Carley Mijovic (the youngest player in the team at only 15 years of age) averaged 7 points and 4 rebounds per game with a game high score of 16 points against Japan and Aimie Clydesdale, playing most of her time at the point guard position, averaged 26.4 minutes playing time per game for the tournament.
Ross Wignell, Basketball Victoria’s Manager of Basketball Operations said: “What a fantastic experience for these girls. Playing on the world scene at such a young age has provided a tremendous development opportunity. Hopefully they have learnt a great deal from this recent World Championship and will now put it to good use, further building on their game.”
