BASKETBALL Victoria is pleased to announce the Hobart Huskies, as part of the Southern Huskies organisation, will join the Victorian-managed Senior Elite League to continue a strong Southern Tasmanian presence in high-calibre basketball competitions.
Following the Hobart Chargers’ decision to withdraw from the Victorian-managed Senior Elite League (official name to be announced), Basketball Victoria has accepted the Hobart Huskies’ application; maintaining two foundation licence holders in Tasmania.
The Huskies will play under the Hobart Huskies name in the Senior Elite League and put forward men’s and women’s teams for the inaugural 2019 season. This will maintain the basketball pathway for Hobart-based men’s and women’s teams and give players within the Southern Tasmanian region a chance to aspire to play at the highest possible level.
The Southern Huskies will continue to play in the Sal’s New Zealand NBL competition in 2019 in addition to the Hobart Huskies’ teams.
Senior Elite League Manager Dean Anglin said the continuation of a Hobart-based side in an elite Australian competition was important and made the Huskies a strong choice to join the league.
“It is great to see the Hobart Huskies, as part of the Southern Huskies group, join the Victorian-managed Senior Elite League,” Anglin said. “Southern Tasmania needs a strong presence in high-calibre competitions and the Huskies joining our league will help strengthen the Tasmanian pathway.
“We look forward to seeing the Huskies join our foundation licence-holders and take the court next year for the inaugural season.”
