Four Victorian schools in ASC Championship Division

FOUR Victorian schools are set to battle the rest of the nation in the upcoming 2016 Helloworld Australian Schools Championships.

After qualifying for the Championship Division following the Basketball Victoria Champion School of Victorian tournament, our top-calibre hopes rest on the shoulders of the Rowville, Marcellin, Box Hill and Maribyrnong.

Three Victorian schools will be represented in the women’s division – led by Basketball Victoria Champions Cup winner Rowville Sports Academy as well as Box Hill Senior Secondary College and Maribyrnong College.

After a thrilling 64-51 triumph over Box Hill in the Senior Girls Championship grand final, Rowville is ready for its campaign in the top tier of Australian schools.

Head Coach Dean Kinsman said the Rowville girls were thrilled to get another crack at the top title and despite losing star forward Chloe Bibby to international duties, he believes the side remains strong across the board.

“Our senior girls are excited to be back in the Open Championships Division after winning this year’s Champions Cup state title,” Kinsman said. “Rowville has had great success in recent years at senior level, winning the 2013 and 2014 Open senior national schools girls titles.

“We are not a big team but we have a lot of depth with this group. Led by our guards. Captain Emma Crees and playmakers Maighain Hedge and Amy Baum.

“Chloe Bibby will be missing from our line up as she will be competing at the Oceania U19 team at the Oceania World junior qualification tournament in Fiji.

“We are extremely proud of Chloe and the girls will step up to cover the huge role that she plays.”

Marcellin College is our only senior men’s team in the Championship Division and will take on powerhouse schools like Lake Ginninderra (ACT) and Sacred Heart College (SA) in the eight-team tournament.

The Helloworld Australian Schools Championships will be held at the State Basketball Centre, Wantirna South, from 4-9 December.
