FIBA announces Mini Basketball Convention for Echuca

THE world governing body for basketball, FIBA has announced four locations across the globe that will conduct a mini basketball convention in 2018/2019.

FIBA Oceania mini-basketball Convention – 2018

Saturday 22nd – Sunday, 23rd September Echuca, Australia

Echuca, Australia (22-23 September), Morocco (16-18 November), Sri Lanka (13-15 December) and Mexico (8-10 February).

FIBA’s Foundation, the International Basketball Foundation (IBF) has launched a worldwide initiative by giving a new momentum to Mini Basketball. Basketball for 5-12-year-old girls and boys plays a crucial role in attracting children to sport. At that age children often have their first contact with sport and particularly team sport.

In launching the conventions, FIBA President Horacio Muratore said “Mini Basketball is extremely important for the future of our sport. Through this initiative, we will be able to embrace the power of our sport and what it can do for development”.

In collaboration with FIBA Regional Offices, the IBF is launching a sports activity with an educational initiative (Convention) at least once per year in each region (Africa, Americas, Asia, Europe, Oceania). Through the international convention FIBA will engage with experts in the region to encourage the exchange of best practice and develop a better global coordination.

Turgay Demirel, President of FIBA Europe stated, “It is at grassroots level that the foundation is laid for any sport, and we are proud of the commitment shown by our federations towards the development of new talent. I am looking forward to what will be delivered at each convention.

Basketball Victoria Country’s General Manager, David Huxtable travelled to Portugal earlier this year to present on the BVC Jamboree conducted in Echuca.

“It was a sensational experience and an exciting opportunity to show European Basketball Federations what we are doing in Regional Victoria.” David said.

This year BVC assisted FIBA Oceania in a funding submission to the International Basketball Foundation. The funding submission was successful and part 1 was presenting on the BVC jamboree.

The second part of the funding will see Echuca, Australia host a FIBA Oceania Mini Basketball Convention that will also give attending delegates the opportunity to view the Jamboree in action.

At this stage it is expected that around 100 delegates from the Oceania area, FIBA Head Office in Geneva and representatives from the International Basketball Foundation will attend. Basketball Australia will also be inviting each States Aussie Hoops/Community Development staff member.

In a first for Australia, the IBF President Sheikh Saud Ali Al-Thani from Qatar will be a guest at the Convention in Echuca and will see the Jamboree first hand.

“This is exciting news for Echuca, Regional Victoria and Australian basketball to have to have the IBF President opening the FIBA convention.” David continued. “The Sheik will be joined by FIBA Oceania President Burton Shipley from New Zealand and the immediate past President of FIBA internationally, Bob Elphinstone.”

The FIBA Mini Basketball Convention will feature a 3×3 demonstration event for 60 male and 60 female teams, the BVC Jamboree for 240 male and female athletes, 24 coaches, 24 Team staff, 18 young referees, 5 referee educators, camp directors and BVC Staff.

Two coaches clinics will be conducted for the attending delegates, BVC Coaches and Jamboree parents and on Sunday, 23 September, delegates will hear from experts in the Mini Basketball area on what is occurring and how programs can be delivered.

Campaspe Shire Council Mayor, Cr Adrian Weston, said Echuca was gearing up for a big weekend.

“The annual jamboree is a significant event in our sport’s calendar and we are delighted the event will play host to the FIBA Oceania representatives and International Guests. The visit will not only showcase the event, but also provide a chance for the international guests to enjoy Echuca and what our region has to offer. We congratulate Basketball Victoria Country on securing the visit in addition to the jamboree.”

The Campaspe Shire Council will host a Civic Reception for the International and National guests on Friday 21 September 2018.

An official launch will be conducted in Echuca on Wednesday 8 August 2018.
