BV Indigenous Under-14 coaches announced

BASKETBALL Victoria is proud to announce the inaugural coaching staff for the 2019 Under-14 Indigenous Program.

The program is a start up of Basketball Victoria in 2018 to provide greater opportunities in basketball for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander athletes.

The Boys Program will have Ricky Baldwin (head coach) and Renai Fejo (assistant coach) at the helm while the girls program will be led by Robbie Baldwin (head coach) and Rebecca McIntyre (assistant coach).

The teams will represent Basketball Victoria in a number of tournaments throughout 2019 including the Eltham-Dandenong Tournament and the Nunawading Tournament.

Players will be selected from a number of upcoming try-out camps held around Victoria. Camps will be held in Dandenong, Horsham, Traralgon and Wangaratta, where selected athletes will be invited to attend a selection camp in Melbourne, which will be held in conjunction with Basketball Victoria’s WNBL Indigenous game between Dandenong and Bendigo.

Basketball Victoria Project Officer Matt Dunstan said the four appointed coaches bring great expertise, passion and a new perspective to our representative teams.

“It’s fantastic to see high calibre coaches seek out this opportunity to lead Basketball Victoria’s inaugural Indigenous basketball teams,” Dunstan said. “Ricky, Renai, Robbie and Rebecca have brilliant credentials – having played and coached throughout Victorian and Australian basketball  – and will guide our next generation of talented players excellently.

“This program is important in helping use basketball as a way to mentor Indigenous players and help build new Indigenous communities throughout Victoria.

“We’re thrilled to see this program bring together Indigenous coaches and children to further enhance the Victorian basketball community.”

For Ricky Baldwin, the chance to give back to the Indigenous community through basketball is a unique opportunity that he’s thrilled to see Basketball Victoria support.

“Being named the first ever boys head coach of the Basketball Victoria Indigenous program means a great deal to me,” Ricky Baldwin said. “It’s an honour as our youth and children need our mob to lead, to teach with rigour and mentor with passion and compassion.

“The burning desire within me to give back to my culture and heritage is something drives me to help create pathways for Indigenous athletes, which l am able to do through the sport l love.

“We want more players like Patty Mills and Rohanee Cox and Australian Indigenous basketball legend Uncle Danny Morseu representing the Boomers and Opals.

“I can’t wait to start this very exciting journey with Victoria’s talented Indigenous athletes.

“There must always be hope; hope that will inspire and drive us into real action that changes lives – we must always remember- effort equals outcome.”
