HONOURING one of our iconic Victorian coaches, Basketball Victoria Country and FIBA Oceania have opened nominations for the second year of the Handson Scholarship.
Basketball Victoria Country and FIBA Oceania will provide two coaching scholarship opportunities – one each for a female and male coach based in Country Victoria – in 2020 through the scholarship program.
Basketball Victoria Country encourages experienced coaches seeking advanced opportunities to apply for this round of the 2020 Handson Scholarship.
The scholarship has been named in honour of iconic Victorian Country coach Marty Handson, who sadly passed away in 2016.
His passion and spirit for coaching is well-known throughout the basketball community. Handson undertook a number of roles throughout coaching and basketball in general both within Victoria and abroad, including Victoria Country High Performance coach, VC Commission Member and FIBA Coach Educator.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for Country Victorian coaches looking to and we couldn’t think of a better person to name the scholarship after than our dear friend Marty Handson,” Basketball Victoria Country Manager David Huxtable said. “Marty loved every aspect of coaching, coach development and enhancing the game at all levels and we’re proud to honour his legacy with this scholarship.
“We’re excited to offer these scholarships in conjunction with FIBA Oceania to ensure Country Victorian basketball coaching continues to advance and develop.”
The Handson Scholarship will operate within the BVC U14 Development Program that will commence with the U14 Regional Skills Days, continue through the U14 BVC Regional Academy and conclude at the BVC Gold Nugget Camp.
It is proposed to seek nominations for the scholarships prior to the U14 Skills Days, select the applicants through a process and conduct the scholarship program through March to October. Together with FIBA Oceania, provide an opportunity at a negotiated point during the period to attend basketball activities in the FIBA Oceania Region.
Participation in the BVC Under-14 Skills Days as a support coach is the first step towards being eligible for the Handson Scholarship, so make sure you register for your local Skills Day. Registrations are available via this link.
